Erika Sawajiri (沢尻エリカ, Sawajiri Erika - is a Japanese actress, modeland singer. ‘Kaachan or Aachan’ as Erika is known to her fans was bornon April 8, 1986 to a Japanese father and French-Algerian mother.
Her name was derived from an orchids’s name, Ericaceae’s Erica.
Her family owned 16 racehorses which explains Erika’s love for horseback riding.
Erika started her career in 1999 after passing the Stardustaudition. She became part of the idol unit Angel Eyes and beganmodeling for junior fashion magazines such as CUTiE and nicola. Shelater won the grand prize for the 2001 Seikore and became a regular onthe BS news program Harajuku Launchers. In 2002, Erika started hercareer in film as well as extending her modeling career as a gravureidol. Her first film was Mondai no nai Watashitachi.
Erika reached full celebrity status after she starred in the hugelysuccessful drama “1 Litre of Tears” (Ichi Rittoru no Namida) in 2005.
Erika portrayed the role of Aya Ikeuchi, a teenager who was diagnosed with spinocerebullar degeneration at the age of 15.
Since then, Erika has starred in similarly successful films and TVseries including Taiyou no Uta (a song to the sun) and Tegami (theletter).
Her single such as Fantasy and Free fared well in the Oricon charts (Japan’s equivalent to the American Billboard charts).
She has recently released her third single Destination Nowhere.
