SPACE FOR YOUR FUTURE, Erika’s 100 portraits First Erika is an armed guerrilla, then she is a clown. A comic character and a student, those are all Erika as well. A total of 100 portraits are showcased on a wall in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo (Koto). The museum currently holds an exhibition called “SPACE FOR YOUR FUTURE”and the subject of the Tanaka Noriyuki’s work is 「100ERIKAS」, withSawajiri Erika as the model.
In this project he worked completely without any CG effects. Thismeans that for every new picture Erika had to change into a differentcostume, had to get a new hairstyle and totally new make-up in order toportrait 100 different personalities. Tanaka himself understood that itwould be a very hard job and at a certain point during the shooting heeven suggested the use of CG himself. However, they continued asplanned and made every picture without the help of the computer.Officials say that the shooting took longer than scheduled and thatErika even gave up oner of her days off only to finish this ambitiousproject. There were several problems before the shooting. They had to decideon 100 different characters first and then there was the fear that inthe end all 100 pictures would look the same for about 90%. Is it evenpossible for one person to portray 100 different personalities withoutlooking the same all the time? Erika was the right person for the job.He explains that he sees in her a great symmetry of “beautifulappearance” and a (not meant in a bad way) “doll like ability” thatlets her store a wide variety of personalities like a “container”without even acting that much (like a doll). But doesn’t acting also play a role? Of course it does, but heexplains that Erika uses both. She can put on a “mask” and be in acompletely different role, sometimes unconsciously, sometimesconsciously. Being able to do this lets the question arise, “What is your owntrue self?”. Tanaka’s work is aimed to ask this question. People canput on so many faces, that it becomes difficult, even for themselves toanswer this question. You could say that the same thing also happened during the promoevent of “Closed Note”. From the Erika that voluntary sacrificed herholiday to finish with work to the Erika with the spiced answer “Betsuni..” is a very big difference. She put on a different mask and the question is whether she did it consciously or not. What is her true self? - This is a question, she might not even be able to answer herself. —————– Source: Sankei MSN Japan (11/21) Written by: HPriest Please credit back when you are going to use this text or an edited version of this text somewhere else.
