Erika’s “betsu ni…”
Erika’s mood at the “Closed Note” promo event made a lot ofheadlines as we all know. First the hostess asked her which scene washer favorite, Erika gave her a snippety “None in particular” (toku ninai desu), and when she was asked what she was thinking when she made abatch of cookies for the cast and crew during shooting, she answered inthe already famous way “Nothing really” (betsu ni).
Now the top60 of Japanese buzzwords of 2007 has been announced and Erika’s “betsu ni..” made it on the list
Here the top10:

01 - KY
abbreviation of kukiga yomenai, “can’t read between the lines” or “can’t sense theatmosphere”, used to describe indelicate or unperceptive people
02 - Child-bearing machines
umu kikai, related to a controversy speech of health minister Hakuo Yanagisawa
03 - Office fees
jimushohi, related to a scandal involving former farm minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka
04 - Some sort of regenerated water
nantoka kangensui, again related to a scandal involving former farm minister Toshikatsu Matsuoka
05 - It couldn’t be helped
shouganai, former defense minister Fumio Kyuma commented on the US atomic bombings in WW2 that “It couldn’t be helped”…
06 - Cabinet of friends
o-tomodachi naikaku,“Cabinet of friends” was used to describe former Prime Minister ShinzoAbe’s first Cabinet, which was criticized for being filled with oldfriends
07 - Back-to-the-wall Cabinet
haisui no jinnaikaku, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe resigned after a year of scandals,the new Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda referred to his new cabinet as the“back-to-the-wall cabinet”
08 - Symbiosis
kyousei, new Prime Minister Fukuda used this word to describe his policy goals
09 - Madame Sushi
When giving a lectureduring a visit to Washington, former defense minister Yuriko Koike saidto the audience: “Some people call me the ‘Japanese Rice’ after MadameSecretary Rice. Why don’t you call me ‘Madame Sushi’?” In Japan, ‘rice’means ’sushi.’
10 - Sonomanma Shock
Without the supportof any political party, former comedian Sonomanma Higashi won theMiyazaki gubernatorial election with 44% of the vote. This send’shockwaves’ through the Liberal Democratic Party.
